In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has called an emergency meeting of its executive council.
The conference will be conducted in Madrid on March 8th.
The UNWTO secretary general has summoned the session in response to Guatemala, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, and Ukraine’s request that the Russian Federation be suspended from UNWTO membership.
Following negotiations between the secretary general and the chair of the executive council from Côte d’Ivoire, the decision was reached.
The face-to-face council meeting will take place in Madrid.
This is the first time in history that the executive council will respond to such a request.
The primary values of the UNWTO are promotion and development of tourism with a view to contributing to economic development, international understanding, peace, prosperity, and universal respect for, and observance of, human rights, according to Article 3 of the organization’s statutes.
The UNWTO has categorically criticised the Russian Federation’s activities, describing them as a clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as a violation of the UN charter’s principles.
