The United States will be restricting travel from India from May 4th 2021. The US President, Joe Biden has imposed travel restrictions from India that prevents most non-American citizens from travelling to the US for an indefinitely. Due to the deteriorating state of affairs in India, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised on the same.

The recent spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in India along with the increasing number of fatalities has made it one of the most dangerously affected countries in the world.

India, consisting of about 1.3 billion people has seen infections rise by more than 1 million in the past week alone. Since the start of the pandemic, this brings its total number of cases to more than 18 million. The death toll has surpassed 200,000 and is expected to be much higher. The surge hit Indi as the government loosened restrictions and struggled to vaccinate its population, with variants potentially serving as an accelerant.

According to CDC, the Indian variant of the virus has characteristics of concern, and is quite easily transmitted. It has also been noted that this new strain may reduce the potential of some vaccines.

From May 4th there will be a ban on travel from India, and this is not going to apply to those that have a scheduled flight for the US before the cut-off time. The US President, Joe Biden has also reimposed a ban on non-US citizens from 26 European countries, as well as the UK, Ireland, and Brazil.

Hence, all non-US citizens who have been in India, and the 26 European countries for 14 days, will not be allowed to enter the US. However, the United States has Exempted certain categories of people from the rule, such as students, academics, and journalists.

The increase in COVID-19 cases has reached an all-time new high which is over 400 thousand a day, a new record, breaking its own previous numbers, and topping the number of daily cases globally. The situation is dire, and most of the world has already banned travel from India.
