Haim Katz, Israel’s Tourism Minister, has encouraged tourists to return to Israel. Travellers were safe in the country, he told the press on Tuesday at the ITB Berlin. He would urge the German government to lift the German Foreign Office’s travel warnings for Israel.

As assurance of the country’s safety, the minister stated that the 150,000 residents of the area bordering the Gaza Strip who were evacuated following Hamas terrorist strikes on October 7, 2023, were lodged in tourist hotels. “That is not something we would have done if the hotels had not been safe.” In the interim, over 80% of inhabitants had been able to return home.

Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are among the top countries for tourism visiting Israel. According to Ksenia Kobiakov, director of Israel’s government office for tourism, 402,000 people visited in 2019. The figure was 207,500 in 2022, following the epidemic, and 213,302 on October 7, 2023. Following that, tourism came to an abrupt halt. Prior to the pandemic, 13,000 visitors visited Israel every day.

On October 8, 2023, they still numbered 23. Meanwhile, the figures fluctuated between 2,700 and 3,400, she claimed. “For the time being we are not counting on 13,000, but perhaps nine to ten thousand visitors”, was Kobiakov’s prediction.
