Flydubai, a Dubai-based airline, began flights to Langkawi and Penang on February 10. The inaugural flight, which coincided with the auspicious first day of Chinese New Year, arrived at Penang International Airport (PEN) and Langkawi International Airport (LGK) to be greeted by local authorities with a water cannon salute and a warm welcome, becoming the first carrier to provide daily service from Dubai to the two airports.
With the addition of flights to Penang and Langkawi, flydubai’s Southeast Asia network now includes four destinations in two countries: Langkawi and Penang in Malaysia and Krabi and Pattaya in Thailand.
Sudhir Sreedharan, Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations (UAE, GCC, Africa and the Indian Subcontinent) at flydubai, said on the start of flights: “We are pleased to see our presence grow in Southeast Asia with the addition of Penang and Langkawi to our growing network. flydubai remains committed to opening up underserved markets and with the start of our daily service, we look forward to offering our passengers more opportunities to explore the beautiful region.”
The maiden flight on the first day of Chinese New Year provides an exciting chance for tourists to immerse themselves in the multicultural festivities and bright events that precede the 15-day Chinese New Year celebrations in Penang. Penang welcomes guests to immerse themselves in the city’s dynamic cultural scene by offering a variety of Chinese New Year activities that capture the essence of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy (PETACE), stated, “We are thrilled that flydubai has introduced Dubai to Penang and Langkawi, marking the first new direct flight route for our airport this year. We believe this will be another key international route from Penang, and we applaud flydubai’s efforts to make Penang a destination of choice for many regional travellers.”
The two new Malaysian destinations offer travelers from the UAE and throughout the flydubai network a mix of heritage, adventure, and relaxation. Penang is the ideal combination of cultural richness and modern charm. George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its lively street art, colonial architecture, and eclectic food. Meanwhile, Langkawi’s clean beaches and lush surroundings provide a tropical paradise for visitors looking for a beach vacation.
Flydubai will operate its most recent aircraft on these routes, with lie-flat seats, internationally inspired cuisine, and hours of immersive entertainment in Business Class and seats designed to maximize space and comfort in Economy Class.
Flights to Langkawi will include a brief stop in Penang, providing travelers from the UAE and throughout the region with easy ways to visit these renowned sites.
